I wanted to take the time to share some ways to jump higher with you. Being able to get higher with your jumps has many advantages. The obvious is the ability to dunk the ball, but there is also the ability of rebound control, shot blocking, more accurate shooting and the ability to run faster. Being able to jump much higher will bring your game to a new level. I want to show you exactly what you’re going to need to do to accomplish that correctly and in the most safe manner.
On of the most important ways to jump higher is through training your muscles required in the jumping movement. As they become stronger, they have the ability to push you further off the ground.
Try starting out doing jump rope. You don’t have to jump very high, in fact, it’s much better if you just keep above the rope as you bounce over it. The idea behind this exercise is that it keeps you on the tips of your toes. The longer you remain on the tips of your toes, the strong your calf muscles will get, which makes your jumping ability improve.
Another great exercise is the standing calf raise. At the gym, you should be able to find a Smith machine. It has a barbell locked into position, so it can only go up and down. Get underneath it, so the bar rests on your shoulder back area. Get a block of wood to put the tips of your toes on. Start pushing up and down. That will work the calf muscles, but here is a tip to get the most out of this workout. As you push yourself up, be extremely explosive in speed. This will make you a much better jumper.

A study was released earlier this month about the effect that watching and listening to sports has on the human brain. The University of Chicago study concluded that following sports has a positive impact on brain activity. These scientists argued that familiarity with sports lingo and the physical movements that go along with it increase activity in the left dorsal premotor cortex.
It is thought that the left dorsal premotor cortex may exert influence on both hemispheres of the brain. Neurologists do not fully understand this interaction yet, but this study by the University of Chicago hoped to answer some questions.
The study showed that sports fans who could recall the physical motions of a sports play without actually seeing it portrayed greater activity in their left dorsal premotor cortex than people who lacked that sports knowledge.
For example, if a basketball fan and someone who has no knowledge of basketball are listening to a game on the radio and the commentator says: “Lebron James dribbles across mid-court. Slashes into the lane, crosses over to his right hand, and posterizes Lamar Odom!” The person who is not a fan will have no idea how to visually interpret the commentary. The basketball fan, on the other hand, can visualize every movement in his/her mind’s eye and may even find themselves unconsciously aping the motion as they are listening.
The sports slang is also important because, while it is more abstract and may seem less meaningful to the ill-informed (such as saying “posterizes” instead of “dunks on”); to the sports fan the slang describes the play in greater detail. In this specific example, the word “posterizes” adds more excitement and intensity for the listener who, as a result, will imagine a more outstanding play than if the commentator had simply used the phrase “dunks on.” This use of the slang allows the listener to see the play in his/her mind’s eye more clearly and may subconsciously trigger the listener to imitate the physical movements.
The ability for the sports fan to hear the play and picture/carry out the physical motion in order to fully comprehend the information is the basis for this study’s breakthrough. The study further enforces the idea of “embodied cognition.” This relatively new psychological theory basically states that our body’s interaction with the physical environment positively affects our cognitive processes.
Dr. Allison Conner, a NYC Psychologist who is an expert in cognitive therapy, explained that “those who play sports as well as watch them may have an even stronger mental response when visualizing specific sports plays and activities.” In the example above, this is evident in the listener’s physical interpretation of the commentators words. Dr. Conner is very excited about the findings of this study and what it could mean for new developments in the cognitive field of psychology: “Studies like this could revolutionize the way we think of cognitive processes.”
This is clearly exciting for all the cognitive specialists out there, but what does this study mean for all those people who never had any conception of a cognitive process to begin with? Let’s just say that the next time someone asks you to get off the couch and stop watching the game, just tell them that you’re breaking a mental sweat.

School fund raising is becoming a more and more in demand topic. With tougher economic times it seems that so many school budgets are being cut across the country. Fund raisers are absolutely essential in order for most all groups to be able to function or have equipment in order to operate. This article will look at three school fund raising projects you might consider.
One - The Jailhouse
One fund raising project that has been very successful in my area has been the jailhouse project. What you do is call prominent business people throughout your area, and people donate so much money for them to be arrested by a pretend policeman that goes down and puts some pretend handcuffs on the person and escorts them to the local pizza parlor or something where they stand in some sort of a made up the jail for a few hours.
Two - Music in the Park
Another very popular school fund raising project is to get many local students that will perform musical ensembles, duets, and form small singing groups. You can advertise this event, by getting donated time on the radio and perhaps getting local printers to print up flyers for you. The community all comes out on a Saturday night or even a weekday night to listen to the music and you collect donations.
Three - Old against the New
The last event that has been very popular over the years for many school fund raising projects is the alumni against the student’s basketball games. There are many medium-sizes to larger communities that will have a good number of alumni, students that played on the basketball team over the years. Perhaps they even have their sons and daughters playing on the basketball team for the same high school now. This can be a tremendous school fund raising project that can get bring community support.

When it comes to the subject of shooting, there is a lot of basketball advice out there. It can be overwhelming for young players to absorb all the information they come across and then implement it when they get on the court. For this article I have tried to simplify the topic as much as possible and cover the key elements of good shooting.
Positioning of Feet and Body
The best shooters will start by shooting just 2-3 feet from the basket when they begin warming up. If you are trying to obtain a new shot, this is the best way to learn it. Start from 2-3 feet, not the 3 point line. Get directly in front of the basket, don’t start from the side or try banking shots. Start from directly in from because you’ll want to swish each shot. We start from the feet up first and that is by getting your feet shoulder width apart with your knees flexed a little bit. I put one foot slightly ahead of the other. I am right handed so it’s my right foot I place forward. If you are left handed it would be the left foot that you would place in front. As we move up to our shoulders, make sure that your shoulders are in balance or squared to your hips. If I am raising my arms to shoot the ball, I need to make sure that my body is in balance and aligned. I don’t want to be tipping to a side or tipping too far forward. I need to be in balance with the weight of my body on the balls of my feet.
Hands
This is something that isn’t taught as well as it should be. Players are usually decent at the legs and shoulders, but terrible when it comes to the hands. You might have read about me referring to players as thumb shooters in other articles. These are players that use their off hand thumb to help propel the ball toward the basket. These players are typically very streaky in their shots because the shot rarely repeats the same release. Take the ball with one hand at first and shoot from 2-3 feet away but don’t use your off hand to help yet. Make sure that you are keeping your elbow in and getting the proper rotation on the ball. For practice, make sure that you are shooting the ball from the logo on the ball so you can see the rotation you should be getting. The ball should be shot from your pointer finger and middle finger. If the ball is coming off the last three fingers then you need to do some adjusting before you bring up your off hand. Once your release is solid, then stay at the 2-3 foot range and bring up the off hand. Your off hand elbow should stay in as well and only guide the ball. Make sure that the rotation stays the same by using the guide hand. If you notice the rotation is different or the ball is coming off your shooting hand different, then stop and start over without the guide hand. Nothing should change by using the guide hand.
Aim
This is a great debate as some coaches say to aim for the back of the rim and others on the front of the rim. I believe that is best to aim at the back rim. In my opinion it is better to miss long because throughout the game you will get tired and the ball will be there when you need it. The important thing is to have a spot that you are aiming for and focusing on. Don’t think about missing it. Think about making the shot and having a positive attitude. Remember that shooting is like golf in that you would rather miss long than short, you want to give the ball a chance to go in. When you leave it short, it has zero chance of going in.
Jump Shots
The jump shot is one of the most basic fundamentals in basketball. It differs from a set shot in that the player jumps in the air before releasing the ball. For a young player, this is very awkward to accomplish. Don’t start too young to shoot these if you aren’t ready. I believe that a jump shot started at too young of an age can lead to poor mechanics. What happens is kids aren’t strong enough yet to get the ball to the basket from far away and because they have to strain themselves they develop poor habits that are hard to get rid of. A good jump shot is learned from inside the free throw line, not at the 3 point line. One of the prettiest shots I’ve seen in a long time is from JJ Redick. He obeys all the correct rules. Balanced feet, square shoulders and his off hand is strictly used just to guide the ball. He gets excellent rotation on the ball and shoots the ball above his head where he can see the basket with both eyes. Other great shooters, like Larry Bird followed those same principles. Bird’s shot wasn’t as pretty as Redick’s, but his release was flawless. It came off the right part of the hand and he could see the basket with both eyes. It was simply amazing to watch up close. I say this a lot, but if your elbow is straight when you shoot the ball will probably go straight. Let’s not make it any more difficult than it already is.
Lay-Ups
I was horrible at lay-ups growing up. I cost myself hundreds of points because I couldn’t make one. I felt it was important enough to cover some of the fundamentals of a solid lay-up.
When I was 12 years old, I went to a basketball camp where the coach filmed us driving in for a lay-up. I was just getting over my lay-up phobia and was ok with being filmed as I thought I was the man. When we watched the tapes we were all amazed at a simple flaw some of us were doing. When we would come in for the lay-up we would bring the ball to the other side of our bodies before we brought it up to shoot with the correct hand. I was worse than everyone at this. By doing this, I was giving the defender the opportunity to slap the ball away or simply knock it away from me. I learned also that this was a major reason I was so bad at lay-ups in the previous years.
When you are shooting a lay-up make sure you are concentrating on using proper footwork. If you are on the right side, typically you will use the left foot to jump off and vice versa from the other side. For younger players this is honestly a major challenge. Young players don’t be alarmed if this isn’t natural for you right away. Lastly, don’t take off too far away from the basket or too late. This can only be learned by practicing and knowing what your personal limitations are. I’ve recently learned that my limitations have changed as I’ve gotten older. No fun.

With the correct plyometric training you can increase your vertical jump by up to 12 inches! That is a really significant change, I will explain how.
I will list one way in this article on how to increase your vertical jump using plyometrics, but remember there are several!
Increase your Vertical jump with traditional weight training
This is one branch of the plyometric vertical jump training, this method uses exercises such as squats, lunges, leg presses and toe raises. This is a heavy load program but there is little repetition, you do each exercise about 4-6 times.
Many would ask. Why is this method an effective way to increase your vertical jump ability? The answer is that in vertical jumping you need to use a lot of power from your body and power is a combination of strength and speed.
Therefore a weight training program that improves your strength can improve your power and increase your vertical jump ability.
However as you become stronger and get on more strength your speed decreases as well and so does your power since your speed is a branch of power as well. So if you’re an expert/experienced person in weight lifting this method will not benefit you as much as the other methods might.
This method is more beneficial for beginners to gain more strength, the plyometric traditional weight training is safe, easy and highly effective way to increase your power at the beginning. You run at a very low risk of injury of spraining when using these simple methods.
As I stated earlier, this is just one of the many methods with which you can increase your vertical jump.
Wait! If you wish to find out more about vertical jump training take a look at http://www.verticaljumphelp.com You will find a sneak peak of an extensive vertical jump program that you can buy for a low price. Anyone can take advantage of this program, if you’re just a high school student, or a business executive. Don’t hesitate!

Growing up, I was quite active. Playing sports was a daily event for me and my friends. From football to basketball, baseball to Frisbee I played it all, whenever I could. As I’m sure you know, with each sport it was important and quite helpful to have the proper equipment. And, I’d say the most important piece of equipment to have is shoes. For all major sports the proper footwear is easy to find. For football you have numerous types of cleats for outdoor and indoor alike. The same goes for baseball, basketball, tennis, and bowling for that mater. For all of these activities the proper athletic shoes can be found on the Internet, at the mall, any discount shoe store and many other shoe outlets. However, if you play sports that are not in the eye of the main stream, there are probably going to be difficulties finding the proper shoe for your needs. I found myself in this predicament all too often because my favorite sport, above all others, is Hacky Sack.
So how do you pick the right shoe for playing Hacky Sack? With many other sports shoes there is a fair amount of cushion on either side of the foot. Some sports footwear has thick soles or a tread specifically designed for the sport. With Hacky Sack all you need is a flat grip sole similar to a basketball shoe. However, unlike basketball shoes, you don’t need all the padding that surrounds the foot. As a matter of fact, the more plain and simple the shoe the better.
Back in the old days as it were, the best thing to use for playing Hacky Sack was pretty much any skate shoe. My first few pairs of Footbag shoes were canvas shoes without large fat toughs, gel soles, and fat laces all of which are undesirable with proper footwear for playing a good game of Hacky Sack. Some people play in boots, sandals or even walking shoes but these options are not ideal. Men’s and women’s boots can be quite heavy and can contribute to early exhaustion and not to mention they can be a pain when they come down on a fellow players toes. Sandals are also not the best choice to play in either. Even though they are light weight and usually have fairly flat surfaces they still have too many open spaces for the Hacky Sack to get caught in and/or get misdirected when kicking. Also, sandals sometimes aren’t always on tight and have been known to come off mid-kick. So, the main thing you are looking for is flat canvas that protects the foot while not being overly bulky. A shoe with a flat insole, face and outer edging is ideal. This means no big fluffy shoe laces, no air pump, and no tags dangling from the shoe. One of the best things about buying a pair of shoes to help your game is that since they need to be plain they are almost always inexpensive and can be found at any discount shoe store. Quality footwear can also be a simple and plain shoe, it does not always have to be the most expensive shoe in the store.
Once you have found the right shoe, now you can play an enjoyable game of Hacky Sack. Good luck! I hope to see you a Hacky circle soon.

Admittedly, I am not a big baseball fan. I appreciate the strategy that is involved, but it is just too slow for my tastes. However, I like all sports to a certain extent. The beauty of all sports is that, unlike many hollywood movies, you never know the ending of a particular game, match, season, series, or which team (or who) is going to win the championship that year (or that event). The unexpected can keep you on the edge of your seat in any game or match either because you are unsure of who is going to win, or because a great athlete pulls off a spectacular play. However, I see no reason why the journey getting there has to be identical as it was over 100 years ago.
Tradition has it place in everything in our society, including sports; but, there is always a balancing act between the sacredness of tradition and the improvement that change can make. Baseball and baseball fans, in my opinion, have always over emphasized tradition and have continually failed to see the advantages of change. For heavens sake — it is a sport — not a religion (yes, even if you are a fanatic).
Football and Basketball are constantly adjusting their rules, schedules, playoffs, conferences, leagues, and anything else they can think of to keep their sport fresh and make it more exciting. They can tell by studies, attendance, and television ratings that their fans enjoy a certain amount of scoring (for example) for their optimum viewing pleasure, and they adjust their rules slightly to do this. Football is as popular as ever and has replaced baseball as our National Pastime. Basketball is doing well also, and I suspect the NBA Finals starting this week will get high ratings because of the ideal Boston-Los Angeles match-up.
As for hockey and soccer, do not even get me started with their problems. Yes, I know, soccer fans, that soccer is the world’s most popular sport, but, it is the fifth most popular team sport in the US. And soccer will never make it big in the US until they change the rules to allow for more scoring. Who wants to watch a sport where a 2-0 first half score is an insurmountable lead? Enough said. Hockey, by allowing unnecessary clutching, grabbing, holding, tripping, elbowing, checking, and most of all, fighting — denies their athletes a chance to show off their exciting athletic skills (e.g., stick handling and skating). A larger rink, as there is in international play, would also help.
Baseball and their fans resist any change no matter how small, reasonable, or advantageous the proposed change. For example, some fans were going to commit suicide merely because interleague play was proposed. And baseball itself, added interleague play at least 50 years after it should have and without a good reason. How about we deny some naturally great rivalries (e.g., Yankees-Mets, Cubs-White Sox) by not allowing them to play? That makes a lot of sense. Interleague has only been good for baseball and it was fought tool and nail.
The same can be said for the addition of the wild card team and hence, the extra round of playoffs. There was great resistance at first and now practically everyone loves it. However, I think baseball has it wrong — the first round of the playoffs should also be best of 7 games. It seems unfair and frankly, silly, that you can get eliminated in fewer games merely because it is the first round. Basketball realized their error and corrected this. I wonder how many centuries go by before baseball corrects this mistake?
The Designated Hitter is more complicated because it is not so clear whether this is good or bad for baseball. I know some of you have strong opinions about this, but, for once, I do not. However, it seems dumb to have it in one league and not the other. I know technically MLB is two leagues, but in reality, it is more like one league. And if baseball and its fans would just stop worrying about tradition for one second, they just might find it more productive to be one league.
If you need more examples, how about how slow it was for MLB to allow Afro-Americans to play? Was that tradition too? How about how long it took them to start testing for steroids and even longer to have any real penalties for a positive test? I think the last couple of weeks (4 wrong homer calls) has shown that baseball has been too slow (again) to add instant replay to get certain calls right. By the time three umpires decide to get together, then actually get together, discuss who saw what wrong, and then make the wrong decision; they could have looked at the instant replay and gotten it right. Oh, gosh, how terrible, traditionally, the call was always made on the field. As with the above examples, I guarantee you that none of the baseball gods will roll over in their grave if you make this change.
In addition to making changes too late for no good reason, baseball does not change things that it should change. Like speeding up the game to make it more exciting. How about not allowing the batter to step away from the batter box, or enforcing the rule about how much time a pitcher has between pitches. Something, anything, to speed up the game. How about making all the baseball parks (i.e., fields) the same size. I cannot imagine playing football one week on a 100 yard field and a 88 yard field the next week. How about a 10 foot basket in Boston and 9 and a half foot basket in LA? Yes, to me, this tradition, for lack of a better word, is moronic.
And while were at it, can we get rid of all that disgusting tobacco chewing/spitting and excessive crotch grabbing that baseball players like to partake in? Baseball players do more crotch grabbing than a Sopranos episode and Michael Jackson video combined. The last thing that a person needs who is trying to enjoy his hot dog (after all — he/she needs something to do — the batter just stepped away from the box again) is to see a grown man regurgitate brown saliva out of his mouth at the same time he is checking his manhood (or lack thereof), all the while on national TV (and/or in front of 60, 000 fans). Sorry, this is one tradition everyone can do without.
