Dracula. The Vampire. The old man who grows younger and gains more health and glow as he sucks in more blood from young women. Vampire stories are very popular today. Great vampire stories lead the bestsellers, including the Twilight Saga by the modern-day great Stefanie Meyer.

Dracula is a name that has sent many a shiver across the spines of millions of readers till date. From the old castle at Transylvania where the Counts of the Dracula family ruled for ages, the Un-Dead travels all the way to Britain - London - to quench his blood-thirst. Mina’s husband Jonathan Harker, Lucy’s fiance Arthur Holmwood (Lord Godalming), Dr John Seward and Quincey Morris join Dr Abraham Van Helsing to bring the demonic force of Dracula to an end after a month-long chase over nearly half of Europe. And Morris dies a gallant death before they all pray for peace - “Amen”.

Written as an agglomeration of multiple sources such as different diaries, narrations, telegrams, letters, phonograph cylinders and newspapers, the novel offers a rather unique flavor of presentation. Add the exploration of Victorian women, culture and even romance to some extent, one can gather the notion of co-existence of modernism and gender roles. Yet other literary critics have viewed the novel as one with sexual implications where Dracula attacks and even seduces innocent women and end up changing their sexual characters altogether (women such as Lucy in the novel).

A Quest for International Law: UN Version 3.0

Realists tell you it does not exist. That there is no such a thing as International Law. And even if there was, there was no way of enforcing it. Their arguments make a lot of sense. Their logic is pure Realism at its finest :

• There is no International Law.
• Laws are made by the stronger.
• the UN is Useless & can not, should not have a role in resolving conflicts or promoting justice
• Because there are dictators who might sign international treaties we should not have treaties

Realism is great. But Guess what. It did not work. It did not protect the strong. The minute that the strong decided to break the spirit of International Law, which it did not really acknowledge as a concept, the strong became weak, exposed and vulnerable … we all become vulnerable in absence of the law … because the law, JUSTICE, is an insurance policy for all of us …

So. Realism did not quite seem to work.

Hence, comes this notion of Post-Realism. A Search for International Law. A Pursuit of Happiness, not just for the Americans, Europeans or Japanese but for every nation. A Quest for Justice not just for Egyptians, Palestinians & Syrians but for Israelis, Tibetans, Indians, Sri Lankans, Cubans, Russians, Armenians, Ethiopians, etc., … justice for all … justice for everyone. For we have learned that no Nation can be happy alone … while the rest of the world suffers.

Realism talks about what’s possible in terms of our own past experience of how things used to happen.

At one moment of Man’s journey … there were no states … there was no law, there was no electricity or telephones.

When one man, possibly code name Osiris, or Azer, but he really represents the civilizing spirit in every society, had the idea, that Man should not kill another man for food … that a concept of “property” exists … at that precise moment … the concept of LAW was Born:”

And Aser gave his fellow men (probably Egyptians Laws, taught them how to farm and how to make wine … and taught them how to honor the gods (do good really) .. he took them out of their savagery.

If MAN insisted on being realist all along that journey of civilization … we would never have LAWS or States … or Electricity … or wine …

But luckily, Man has never given up the gift of “Dreaming” … for he was endowed with imagination and vision , the ability to see things … not only as they are … or as they used to be … but as they COULD BE.

This is the power of Vision my friends … we should never lose sight of that … and we should never let anyone tell us that things can’t get better on the grounds that things are indeed dire … for when things are bad … this is the best time when Man can install something better … only when it is bad … that traditionalists and conservatives will accept a new solution which may allow things to be less bad … or simply better …

But most of all, we should never fall victims of Realism at bad times, because when things are bad … Realism really becomes another word for pessimism.

Now, we have to ask ourselves: is this the best Man can do?

International Justice: is it really “No-can-do”?

I am not talking here about Palestine or Israel, I am talking about everything … about Kyoto, the Ozone Layer and global warming … I am talking about kids starving in Africa and conflicts breaking in Georgia. I am talking about it all. Wouldn’t be nice to have something, an international institution, which can actually provide a framework for International Law, including arbitration, litigation and enforcement?

Guess what. Such an institution exists. In fact, version 2.0 of that institution does exist. It is called the United Nations. Version 1.0 (the League of Nations, rest-in-peace) was full of bugs, and because it was so buggy it did not manage to prevent the horrors of World War 2. World Peace “Crashed” and 40 million people died. So in 1945, the warring nations, after the war, developed version 2.0, and sat on its Security Council. And it did manage to prevent War again between the five.

But guess what. It had no room for the weak. It did not listen to the poor. So, the weak decided, to take the Law in its own hand, launching a “Parallel War”, using terror and killing civilians instead of engaging in a formal conventional war for which the weak had no capacity to handle or chance to win.

Isn’t this always the case? When the Law fails to deliver justice, people resort to violence, hire thugs and take the law in their own hands?

So,I say that now, it is time for UN version 3.0

And please, this time, we need the weak to sit on the table with the strong.

The poor with the rich.

This is how we can rid ourselves of this Bad Karma which seems to be haunting us. Catching up with us where we least expect it.

Let us work on UN Version 3.0 and improve our Karma a little. Shall we?

Albert Einstein is to this day considered one of the most brilliant men in history, his theories still seem to hold up to day in the scientific courts. Indeed, many of his own theories that he was skeptical of continue to amaze modern day scientists who are engaged in scientific experiments to get at those truths. The question recently posed at the Online Think Tank was, if Einstein were alive today, what would he think and what would he say? What words of wisdom would he depart on the economic situation, global economy, and modern day physics? If you look at many of his quotes he appears to have already predicted much of what is today, similar to the recently departed Arthur C Clarke predicted our future, which keeps unfolding nicely, right along with his major science fiction works.

Are we chasing Einstein’s dream, Plato’s Utopia and Arthur C. Clark’s science fiction, or did they like Nostradamus simply study their history, watched for repeating patterns and come up with the plausible future based on mankind’s dreams, imagination, and inspiration while factoring in humankind’s flaws, perseverance and ignorance?

What would Einstein have said about this current election process? Would he have said something like; “Politics is no way to run mankind’s affairs” or “Neither Capitalism or Communism is perfect, a hybrid of those and other theories maybe the answer?” Einstein in 2009, wouldn’t it be great to peer once again into that mind?

If you’re thinking about getting your ex girlfriend back, it’s only natural to wonder if she still has feelings for you. Many men think that in order to attract a woman you need to listen to her and share a bit about yourself as well. Yet the truth of the matter is what she has to say and what she wants to know mean absolutely nothing.

Are most long married couples unhappy with their relationship? This is the question that has being bugging me for a while. As a Feng Shui consultant, I come across many clients with less than happy marriages. Many times my clients will ask me for a ’secret’ cure or recommendation that would miraculously improve their relationship with their spouse.

So, I asked a few of my married friends for their opinion. I chose this select group because they are older - over fifty years old - and have been married for many years. Their answer was quite shocking- to me. Based on their personal experience and those of their friends, they think that 90% of married couples are, in one way or another, unhappy with their relationships.

Granted that they do not live happily ever after, as in the fairy tales, this is still quite sad - if it is indeed true.

Is there a cure? Maybe there is.

In many olden societies, such as the Chinese, where arranged marriages are commonplace, it is a practice to check the horoscope (Ba Zi) of the intended couple for compatibility, before they are allowed to tie the knot.

Does this always work? It increases the chance but it does not work all the time. However through years of observation, they found out that if you combine it with some conditions, you can increase the chances of having a happy and lasting marriage.

While this wisdom is for everyone, it is even more critical for those with a history of unsuccessful marriages or relationships, to take note.

Here are some of the conditions.

In the old days, the husband must always be older than the wife. This is like a tradition. It cannot and should not be broken. However the ancients also observed that for those with unsuccessful marriages or relationships, breaking the tradition - i.e. having an older wife - can strangely be the answer. To the ancient Chinese, the wife is considered older even if she is a day older than the husband. However for better results, a wider age gap is preferred.

The other option for a more successful relationship is for the husband to be much older than the wife. To the ancient Chinese, much older means at least 8 years apart. In practice, 10 or 15 years older is perfectly acceptable or desired.

It would also increase the chances if there is a big disparity in the social and economic standard between the husband and the wife. For example the husband is a highly educated CEO of a large corporation while the wife is a much lesser educated person from a poor family. Can it be the other way around? It is unlikely in the old days because the husband is always the breadwinner. However in this modern times, where many women out-earn their husbands, why not?

This next condition only applies to the woman - at least in the old days. If she cannot be a successful first wife, it does not mean that she cannot be successful being the second or third one. So, being the other women can be an option that leads to success! I am not sure about being the other man though!

What if none of the above works?

The final option is to have a spouse that is of a different race or from a different culture. For example, an Indian and a Chinese or between two Chinese brought up in different places. For example, one brought up in China and in the other in the United States.

These are wisdoms that our forefathers have passed down to us. So, and especially, if you are relationship challenged, give it a try. There is nothing to lose!
